Sunday night’s supermoon is expected to be a glorious sight, but the vision might be blotted out by dense cloud cover in the mountains and patchy clouds from the Front Range east, according to the National Weather Service.

“It’s not looking the best. We have a storm system coming overhead,” said Russell Danielson, NWS meteorologist.

The best chance to get a look at the moon will be along the Front Range and eastward. “You will be likely to see some glimpses of it. There won’t be 100 percent cloud coverage,” Danielson said.

A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its perigee at the same time it is in the full moon phase, said Angela Speck, MU director of astronomy and professor of astrophysics. This makes the moon appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual.

The perigee is the point in a moon’s orbit when it is closest to the Earth’s surface — about 222,000 miles away, according to space.com. The moon’s elliptical orbit causes its distance from the Earth to vary by 30,000 miles.

Sunday is expected to be partly sunny with a high temperature of 64 degrees in the metro area.

Colder weather is on the way. Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 40s through Thursday.

The temperature will climb back into the 50s on Friday.

Temperature in the mountains will be cooler, “but by Friday will increase just like the plains,” Danielson said.
