Mikaela Shiffrin, of the United States, skis down the course during women’s World Cup super G skiing race action in Lake Louise, Alberta, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017.

Mikaela Shiffrin closed a successful weekend of speed racing Sunday at Canada’s Lake Louise resort, finishing fifth in a super-G and increasing her lead in the World Cup overall standings.

Shiffrin was third and first in a pair of downhill races Friday and Saturday — both of which were career bests in that discipline — and Sunday marked the second-best super-G result of her career.

“It was a very, very great weekend,” Shiffrin told reporters there. “I have to say it’s really, really exciting to race in speed (events). I know how it feels when I train, I get the same feeling, so the biggest thing for me these last days is to find the mentality that I can be aggressive and let it go at the same time. Otherwise I’m always thinking, ‘I can’t wait to ski slalom and GS again.’ ”

Shiffrin plans to race super-G and combined next week at St. Moritz, Switzerland, then train slalom and giant slalom while skipping speed races the following weekend at Val d’Isere, France, and Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria, in mid-January. The intervening races are slalom and giant slalom. Then she would race downhill at super-G Jan. 20-21 at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

Shiffrin beat her closest competitor in the World Cup overall standings, Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany, in all three of the Lake Louise races, gaining 69 points over her rival. Her current lead is 174 points. Rebensburg finished 13th on Sunday.

“It’s really early to tell what’s going to happen with the overall, but it looks like Viki will be a top contender and it looks like I’ll be in the running as well,” Shiffrin said. “I think it’s always important for there to be some kind of a fight for the overall. Viki’s a great competitor, and it’s great to see her performing so strongly. It’s a pleasure to have that competition with her in the overall.”
