Soon, the guessing game will end and the College Football Playoff picture will become clear.

Championship weekend is in the books. Four outcomes narrowed the pool of candidates, and now, three teams appear locks as VIP members of college football’s most exclusive club.

1. Clemson: The No. 1 team in the country throttled Miami from the start in a 38-3 blowout of Miami in the ACC title game.

2. Oklahoma: Quarterback Baker Mayfield threw four touchdowns in a 41-17 rout of No. 11 TCU, as the No. 3 Sooners won a third consecutive Big 12 championship.

3. Georgia: The No. 6 Bulldogs won their first SEC title since 2005, defeating No. 2 Auburn by a score of 28-7.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. No. 8 Ohio State defeated No. 4 Wisconsin, 27-21, in the Big Ten Championship game, surely knocking the Badgers out from playoff contention. But is the Buckeyes’ résumé impressive enough to jump No. 5 Alabama? The debate will rage on until the matchups are announced on ESPN starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The case for Ohio State: The Buckeyes’ have two losses — 31-16 against Oklahoma and 55-24 at Iowa — but they also defeated the No. 4 team in the country to win a conference title.

The case for Alabama: A 26-14 Iron Bowl defeat knocked the Crimson Tide out of contention for the SEC championship. But few teams pass the “eye test” like Alabama, which dominated through its first 11 games.
