A “flu bug” has made its way around the Broncos’ locker room and infected a handful of players, including quarterback Trevor Siemian.

“Hopefully guys can take care of themselves and we can get a handle on that,” coach Vance Joseph said. “It’s about four or five guys that are sick right now, especially our D-line.”

Last week, nose tackle Domata Peko missed practice time with the flu but played through the illness Sunday until he was carted off with a knee injury. This week, outside linebacker Shane Ray was limited and defensive end Shelby Harris did not practice because of illness. Siemian practiced in full, but is dealing with the same issue.

“A couple of us got it,” Siemian said. “I’ll be all right.”

D-Line Injuries. Six players did not practice Wednesday because of injuries, including defensive linemen Domata Peko (knee) and Derek Wolfe (neck). Joseph initially said Peko’s left MCL sprain would require 1-2 weeks of recovery, but the veteran nose tackle is holding out hope he can start his 124th consecutive game Sunday in Miami.

Wolfe was absent from practice as the team continues to evaluate and monitor his recovery from a neck sprain.

“When you’re talking about a neck or head injury, you want to be smart with those guys,” Joseph said. “Obviously, his overall health is more important than our next five games. We want to make sure he’s ready to play. It’s a neck injury so that can be scary.”

With the injuries on the line, the Broncos had rookie DeMarcus Walker practice with the D-line Wednesday after spending the previous entirety of his first year working with the outside linebackers.

“We only had three guys today healthy enough to practice (on the line)” Joseph said. “… He’s always going to be a swing guy, as an outside backer/rusher and inside rusher. Absolutely, if we would need him on game day, he would have to slide inside.”

Miller still Miller. Following the Broncos’ loss at Oakland last Sunday, outside linebacker Von Miller admitted he was frustrated by the team’s losing streak and in large part because he felt he entered the year in the best shape of his life and has been unable to fully take advantage of it.

But Miller’s numbers show he’s actually playing quite well. His team-high 8.5 sacks put him on pace for 12 on the season, more than his total (11) in the Broncos’ 2015 Super Bowl season. And when taken into context, he’s produced more while facing more hurdles. Per Pro Football Focus, Miller has been chipped or blocked by a running back or tight end before they release into their routes, 40 times through last Sunday, the third-most of any defender in the league in that span. Yet he leads all 3-4 outside linebackers with 54 pressures (sacks, hits and hurries combined).

P-Squad addition. A day after Aqib Talib‘s suspension was reduced to one game, the Broncos signed Michael Hunter to the practice squad for enforcement. A second-year undrafted player out of Indiana, Hunter signed with the Giants in 2016 and was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury last October. He signed with the Jets’ practice squad Nov. 11 and was released Nov. 24.

Dolphins take Derby. The Dolphins were awarded tight end A.J. Derby off waivers from Denver on Wednesday. Derby was cut with a shoulder injury after leading all Broncos tight ends in catches (19) and receiving yards (224) this season.
