Days after Conor McGregor caused a stir in a confrontation with referee Marc Goddard on Friday at Bellator 187 in Dublin, Ireland, the outspoken mixed-martial arts star took to Instagram to issue an apology.

McGregor, who was a spectator at the event, climbed into the cage to celebrate his teammate Charlie Ward’s knockout victory over John Redmond. But soon after, McGregor became involved in a minor fracas with Goddard.

“I sincerely apologize for my behavior at last weekends fight event in Dublin,” McGregor writes on Instagram. “While trying to support a loyal teammate and friend, I let my emotions get the best of me and acted out of line. As a multiple weight UFC champion, executive producer, role model and public figure, I must hold myself to a higher standard.

“The referee Marc Godard (sp) was making a horrendous decision in trying to pick an unconscious fighter up off the floor and force the fight to continue into the second round. Even against the wishes of the said fighters coach. The fight was over.

“After witnessing my fighter in a fight where the worst happened and the opponent passed away from his injuries on the night, I thought the worst was about to happen again, and I lost it and over reacted. I am sorry to everyone.”

McGregor apologized to several people by name with the biggest omission being Goddard.

The referee posted a lengthy account of the incident on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

“So to all of you out there who wrongly assumed that I approach Charlie to eject Conor then you are sadly mistaken and plain wrong,” Goddard writes, “the only reason I approach is to tell Charlie to Go back to his corner as the fight was not over. It’s called restoring order and gaining control – who else was going to do it?”

McGregor (21-3), the UFC lightweight champion, last fought in an MMA ring on Nov. 12, 2016. He lost via technical knockout in his professional boxing debut to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Aug. 26.
